| 授業概要 Course Description |
This lecture course critically examines traditional and contemporary British culture, and the notion of 'Britishness' itself, through the dynamic, provocative lens of British popular music and representative song lyrics. By critically surveying the origins, history, and
development of popular music in the UK, this course will assist students in developing a vocabulary and communicative strategies for defining and thinking critically about personal, group, and national culture and identity and related issues in English. It will alert them to some ways in which Britain and British life have significantly altered yet stayed the same over the last hundred years. This should be provocative in making them consider their own culture and its shifting nature too.

This course aims to nurture a thorough understanding of some social-cultural differences and connections between attitudes and behaviour in contemporary Britain and that in the Britain of previous centuries, together with implications this has regarding British identity, and its expression in the beautiful language and popular music that this nation gave to the world.

The first week's lecture will cover background and the second week's lecture will examine representative performers, their songs and their lyrics, with a degree of necessary overlap and cross referencing.

The lectures will progressively follow units in the textbook and give you some ways, via study of popular music and the kinds of language and attitudes it contains, into the issues and aspects of British Culture and ‘Britishness’ under inspection, but you must also try to find your own ways to comprehend the subject and its range of implications and meanings.
