授業概要   Course Description Literature and Animal Studies: A Soft Introduction to Environmental Humanities
According to British zoologist Desmond Morris, humans like best those animals that look and behave most like themselves. Over the course of history, humans have interacted with nonhuman animals in various ways. In this course, we will discuss a selection of poems, stories, essays, and films about various nonhuman animals, written in different time periods and different countries. We will undertake this project with a two-pronged goal: to further our humanistic inquiry into the nature of nonhuman animals and the environment as a soft introduction to environmental humanities; and to think critically about human-centered views of the world.
到達目標   Class Goals (1) To read poems, stories, and essays about nonhuman animals, across time periods and national boundaries, in order to further our understanding of animals--including wild and domesticated animals--and human-animal relationships;
(2) To critique human-centered views of the world by engaging with literary explorations
of animals, nature, and the environment;
(3) To develop reading, writing, and thinking skills through close literary analyses;
(4) To gain an appreciation of the world outside of the human kingdom.

Remarks for Class		 This course is intended to be reading-intensive. We would also like to engage in various active learning activities, depending on the class size. In-class activities such as reflection notes and online discussions will be important, as those will help us apply literary concepts to our understanding of the world beyond the texts.
