授業概要 Course Description |
Course Subtitle: Cats and Literature According to British zoologist Desmond Morris, humans like best those animals that look and behave most like themselves. Because of their complex personalities--or, one might say, purrsonalities--cats have been a mainstay in world literature for centuries. Authors from all cultures have found them ready candidates for symbol or metaphor within literary works, as literary critic Barbara Byrne observes. It is hard to deny that cats are interesting: they are mysterious, independent, intelligent, and empathic; they are both human-like and un-human. In this second semester of a soft introduction to environmental humanities, we will discuss a selection of poems, stories, essays, and films about cats, written in different time periods and places, with a two-pronged goal: to further our understanding of or speculations into the nature of this creature as part of the larger social and environmental entanglements; and to think critically about human-centered views of the world.
|
到達目標 Class Goals |
(1) To read poems, stories, and essays about cats across time periods and places in order to further our understanding of cats, one of the most familiar yet misunderstood--and unappreciated, sometimes even mistreated--companion animals; (2) To critique human-centered views of the world by engaging with literary explorations of animals, nature, and the environment, as part of a soft introduction to environmental humanities; (3) To develop reading, writing, and thinking skills through a close analysis of literary works; (4) To gain a lifelong appreciation of cats. You must love cats.

授業に関する注意事項 Remarks for Class |
This course is intended to be reading-intensive. We would also like to engage in various active learning activities, depending on the class size. In-class activities such as reflection notes and online discussions will be important, as those will help us apply literary concepts to our understanding of the world beyond the texts.
