| 授業概要 Course Description |
Course Subtitle: Understanding Contemporary America
One of the defining attributes of American culture is the speed with which it changes--and the sheer range of cultural artifacts that it produces in that process. In the first semester of this two-semester course sequence, we will focus our attention on the contemporary period, and delve into various facets of American culture, ranging from education, fashion, sports, food, to social issues. We will read, listen to, or watch cultural products (films, music, essays, podcasts, etc.) in an effort to take a peek into how intersectionality surfaces as a central feature of American life.

(1) Students will gain a broad understanding of various facets of American culture, with a particular emphasis on its contemporary forms.
(2) Students will acquire knowledge of contemporary social issues, alongside cultural awareness and sensitivity, especially with regard to the intersectionality of race, gender, class, and other identity attributes that make up a distinctly American concept of diversity.
(3) Students will learn how culture is both represented and embodied by various cultural artifacts, such as films, music, art, and food.
(4) Students will formulate and express ideas in written and spoken English.

Students are expected to engage with ideas and representations that emerge in various films, essays, music, and other art forms. In-class activities such as journal writing and group discussions will be important, as those will help us apply cultural studies concepts to our understanding of the world beyond the texts.
