| 授業概要 Course Description |
This course is intended to be a bridge between the writing of the standard English five-paragraph essay and more advanced English writing such as the graduation thesis. Students enrolling in the course are assumed to have learned how to write a five-paragraph essay already in previous courses, but have not yet acquired the knowledge and skill necessary to construct the type of advanced academic writing required for third- and fourth-year university courses. The course will begin with a review of the principles of English academic writing organization (i.e., the five-paragraph essay), and will quickly move on to the construction of an academic research paper that conforms to the prescribed guidelines established by both the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the American Psychological Association (APA), with specific regard to format, usage and style, quoting and paraphrasing in in-text citations, and works cited/references. The course will enable students to construct the type of academic papers required in many undergraduate and post-graduate courses in institutions of higher learning throughout the English-speaking world.
Note: The MLA (Modern Language Association) style is the appropriate style for students studying liberal arts or the humanities, i.e., in the Arts and Letters Department. The APA (American Psychology Association) style is the appropriate style for students in the social sciences, i.e., the Sociology or Psychology Departments.

Class Rules and Requirements:
(1) Students must complete all course requirements, including practice writings, outlines, miscellaneous writing tasks, in order to achieve a superior grade in this course,.
(2) Students will be required to produce one formal paragraph, one formal five-paragraph essay, and one formal academic research paper. STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT ALL REQUIRED FORMAL PAPERS TO PASS THE COURSE.
(3) Regrading unavoidable absences/lateness in submitting assignments: Students are, of course, excused for required academic activities, internships, or illness with official excuse forms from the Kyoumuka and also for personal matters (e.g., death in the family) upon consultation with the teacher.
