授業概要 Course Description |
In this seminar, we will read, talk, think and write about short stories and film adaptations based on those short stories. First, we will work on understanding what short stories are, how they work, and what effects they have. We will examine their structure, background and effects on readers. We will do this by discussing, asking questions, writing and presenting ideas. We will search the stories for criticisms, emotions, powerful language, cultural expressions, and artistic patterns. We will look deeply at how stories work, and discover how we live in stories that are inside culture. The course will be an active interaction with the stories, films and everyone in the seminar.

This class aims at raising the level of thinking in English about literature. Understanding how short stories work builds up the critical skills for approaching any type of text. The class will also improve reading, writing, discussion and presentation skills in English. Reading short stories will also give insight into literary styles and the importance of stories in human life. Becoming able to express complicated responses, abstract responses and individual ideas in English through discussion, presentation and writing is fundamental to the goals of the class.

Be ready to participate actively and use critical thinking on the content and form of the stories. Push yourself to use English to express your ideas, opinions, and reactions, and try to think in English. The stories must be read many times, so preparation for every class is extremely important. Students must read closely, prepare questions, take notes and be ready to participate fully in class discussions before every class. Films must also be watched to take notes. This will require you to do at least three hours of work per week.
