| 授業概要 Course Description |
This seminar focuses on narrative in the novels and film adaptations of important contemporary writers and directors. The seminar will discuss the novels and then extend that study by comparing the novels to the films made of those novels. These novels include insights into American history, culture, and contemporary life, and challenge readers to look deeply into their own responses. These writers criticize American life and situations, however, their themes are universal ones: life, death, love, family, friendship, growth, knowledge, and truth. The course will require reading several chapters of the novels or watching films every week, and students will discuss and present in every class in English.

The purpose of this seminar is to understand how novels offer insight, criticism and a complex response to culture, humanity and society. Understanding the connections of stories as one way to understand the world is a key goal. The class will be conducted entirely in English, with the goal of raising students' spoken and written skill level considerably. Critical thinking in English will be a basic part of the class. Students will present their analysis and opinions in clear, professional-level English and be able to write strongly and competently in English by the end of the course.

Be ready to participate actively and use critical thinking on the thematic content and literary form of the novels. Push yourself to use English to express your ideas, opinions, and reactions in more subtle and complex ways. The novels need to be read and re-read, so preparation for every class is extremely important. Students should review each week's class in order to prepare for the next section of reading, and be sure to review notes after every class, which will take at least an hour per week of review. Students must read the assigned chapters every week, write down questions and opinions, and be ready to engage in class discussions every week. Films will be studied just like a novel. You will need to spend a minimum of three hours per week to prepare.
