| 授業概要 Course Description |
There are more than 6,000 natural languages spoken in the world. At first sight, each language looks unlimitedly different from each other. A current research in theoretical linguistics, on the other hand, has discovered surprising universals among them and shown that even superficial diversity is strictly constrained by principles that lie behind them.
In this course, we will learn how a generative approach tackles the unsolved question of the human language faculty, through hypothesis-making and hypothesis-testing and group discussion.

Theoretical linguistics has two main procedures: data observation and data analysis/theorization. In this course, we will learn how to study an apparently intangible object like language scientifically and how to derive a generalization from linguistic data, by looking at various languages of the world (Basic syntax will be taught in 統語論AB).
