授業概要   Course Description In this seminar, we will explore famous places in the waka tradition. We will focus on sites in and around the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, while also examining key points beyond. Why were these places important to poets? How did their significance and associations change over time? What relation do these places now have to waka? In seeking to answer these questions, we will also consider the role of place in modern life and society. This seminar will be conducted in Japanese and English. Course materials will include pre-modern Japanese texts, modern Japanese translations, and English translations. Sites for study will be selected in consultation with the students.
到達目標   Class Goals 1. Students will learn about Japanese poetry and its translation into English.
2. Students will gain translation experience by producing their own translations.
3. Students will hone their critical thinking abilities and creativity through class discussions and activities.
