授業概要 Course Description |
Welcome to the world of “Positive Action.” In this course we will read and highlight each changemaker’s contribution to the world. Major topics will include women’s rights, environmental problems, food waste, peacebuilding, and some social and global problems. Making use of fascinating learning materials from Cengage Learning, students will be more familiar with academic topics and acquire broader knowledge and understanding of each subject. While increasing their vocabulary, students will develop reading, listening, speaking, writing, and critical thinking skills. Also, this course aims to help students express their opinions and ideas more clearly in English. The participants will be motivated to have fun studying English and to prepare for a higher level of learning.

By the end of this course, students should be better able to ・ learn a number of words and idiomatic expressions in everyday life as well as academic life. ・ understand local, national, and global issues at a deeper level. ・ learn and develop a variety of reading techniques: extensive reading, close reading, rapid reading, scanning, skimming, and reading aloud. ・ improve critical reading and thinking in English. ・ clearly write their ideas and opinions in response to discussion questions in specific topics. ・ explain a variety of situations and give an opinion by using simple words and expressions. (Students may use visual information and non-verbal communication to enhance their presentations.)

Active, Informed Participation in Weekly Discussion (including pair activities and the roles of facilitator and respondent in small group discussion) – 5 % Two Reading and Writing Assignments (including one-paragraph summaries and one-paragraph responses) (10% each×2) – 20% (completion of homework assignments on Manaba) Two Vocabulary Review Tests (10% each×2) – 20% Outline for Midterm Presentation – 5% *Midterm Presentation – 20% (Grading criteria include content, organization, delivery, language accuracy, and spirit) Outline for Final presentation – 5% *Final Presentation – 25% *As for the midterm and final presentations, each time students will be required to choose one of the presentation topics relevant to the themes that have been covered in the textbook.
