授業概要   Course Description This course, English through Popular Music, focuses on the essential parts of speech, common abbreviations, and changes that occur in stress, rhythm and intonation in the English language through some of the most popular songs in contemporary music.
Throughout this course, various aspects of the English language will be examined, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, as well as common abbreviations. The course also introduces stress and rhythm in English and how it can be affected when used in songs.
To enhance our understanding of these concepts, the course uses some of the biggest and most popular songs in contemporary music as our listening material, providing a practical and relatable context for the English language learning.
This is a learner-centered course with a student-generated materials being used for classwork and homework.
This course involves pair-work and small group group-work to complete tasks and activities, and vocabulary related to rock and pop music and genres will also be discussed throughout the course.
By the end of this course, students should have a better understanding of the essential parts of speech, common abbreviations, and changes in stress and rhythm in English, and be able to apply these concepts to your own listening and speaking skills, and be able to enjoy listening to popular music with greater confidence.
到達目標   Class Goals The primary objective of this course is to develop students' listening ability through some of the biggest selling popular songs of all time, and to give students exposure to and practice with the parts of speech in English.
Other objectives include:
- to improve students' understanding of the different parts of speech in English, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and conjunctions.
- to teach students how to identify and use common abbreviations in English
- to increase students' awareness of changes in stress, intonation, and rhythm in English, and how these changes can affect the pronunciation, meaning and emphasis of spoken or sung words.
- to provide students with opportunities to practice their listening skills through exposure to some of the biggest songs in popular music.
- to provide students with opportunities to apply their newfound knowledge of parts of speech, abbreviations, and changes in stress, intonation, and rhythm through interactive activities and group discussions.
- to help students develop their critical thinking skills by encouraging them to analyze and interpret the lyrics of the songs they are listening to.
- to create a fun and engaging learning environment that is conducive to building students' confidence and fluency in listening to English in a musical context.
- to give students opportunities to perform and present their skills in class and to their peers.
- to provide students with feedback on their progress and to give them opportunities to reflect on their learning and to set goals for future improvement.

Remarks for Class
As 45% of the grade for this course comes from participation, students enrolling in this course will be required to actively participate in pair work and small-group work discussion, and regularly post to the course Forum in manaba.
Successful students must complete all assignments, in addition to participation both in class and online, to pass the course.
The major assignment for this course (Song Cloze - 20%) is due by the end of the eighth week of the course.
Each set of homework for this course is expected to be completed in one week.
Students will be required to give a short presentation in English of their Song Cloze (10%) over the final weeks of the course.
Students are reminded that they need to pay attention to Meiji Gakuin University’s class attendance policy for this course.
