| 授業概要 Course Description |
This course will introduce students to American poetry. In small groups and as a class we will read and discuss, in English, some of the very best of American poetry from the nineteenth century until the present. The focus of this class will be on the various messages, styles, themes and literary techniques of the poetry examined, as well as the historical and social context of the poems and the poets themselves. Initially, we will explore basic techniques on how to read and appreciate poetry, and eventually students will be given the opportunity to write their own poems. By doing so, students' ability to read more advanced English material will improve. The further aim is to foster an enthusiasm for poetry, and to demonstrate how even poems from the past can be made new and fun for students of today. When we allow good poetry to speak to us deeply, our world widens as we begin to notice new details of life. By reading and discussing the creative works of others our own creativity is enriched. Evaluation will be based on completion of weekly readings and questions on the readings, active participation in discussions, writing assignments, and final reports and presentations.

The course aims to encourage an appreciation and enthusiasm for American poetry and poetry in general. It will teach students how to read poetry and to allow students to try their hand at writing poetry. It will enable students to identify styles, themes, ideas and the broader context of the poems examined. It will certainly boost students ability to read and comprehend written English.

If you are interested in expanding both your reading ability and your poetic understanding of life, you will certainly enjoy this course. This class will be entirely conducted in English, but emphasis will not be on translating poems word by word, but on discovering wider meaning and context, and demonstrating that poetry can be great fun.
