| 授業概要 Course Description |
The benefits of regular reading are too numerous to list in any syllabus, but consider these four:
1. Fluency – Reading will show you how language is actually spoken (and written) far better than any textbook.
2. Vocabulary – New words, new phrases, laid out in context and ripe for the plucking. Don’t pass them over. Look them up and take them with you.
3. Experience – Reading is a portal to new experiences; some that people have lived, others that people have imagined. Both have much to teach you.
4. Growth – Reading can help you think outside of yourself (and culture), allowing you the freedom to engage with all the different ways there are of looking at the world.

| 到達目標 Class Goals |
Half the course will be group work. Our textbook provides several reading techniques to help us process and react to stories and we will use them to read, listen to, and share ideas about a variety of stories together. The other aim is for students to experience the benefits of regular reading for themselves, by building a reading practice. Students will select a book that speaks to them for reading at home. They will keep a journal to record new vocabulary, as well as their reactions to each chapter and, at the end of the course, they will make a presentation on their books to the class.

This is a participation-heavy course, a significant portion of your grade (40%) will come from how well you keep your journals and how much you contribute to group discussions. There will also be two tests (10% each) and the final presentation (40%).
