| 授業概要 Course Description |
The American short story is a particularly abundant form of literature, and this will be the focus of this course. Students will obtain their own anthology of American short stories and as a class we will read a different short story over each two-week period. Reading will occur mainly outside of class, while in class we will concentrate on English discussions of the stories with emphasis on plot, character, themes and context. Some of the greatest American writers will be featured in this class: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry James, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Katherine Anne Porter, Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote and others. And with these writers as our guides, we will be able to explore both outer and inner aspects of American life over more than two centuries, and to reflect upon how these stories are still very relevant to our lives in modern Japanese society. This course will certainly improve your English overall and your ability to read more advanced writing. Evaluation will be based on completion of weekly readings and questions on the readings, active participation in discussions, writing assignments, and final reports and presentations.

The course aims to encourage an appreciation and enthusiasm for American short stories and the short story in general. It will teach students how to better read stories and to allow students to make deep reflections on their reading. It will enable students to identify styles, plots, characters, themes, ideas and the broader context of the stories examined. It will certainly boost students ability to read and comprehend written English.

If you are interested in expanding both your reading ability and your understanding of the development of the American short story, you will certainly enjoy this course. This class will be entirely conducted in English, but emphasis will not be on translating stories word by word, but on discovering wider meaning and context, and demonstrating that reading short stories can be great fun.
