授業概要   Course Description Few people are natural-born essay writers; it takes practice and a keen eye and lots of practice to learn how to separate what works from what doesn’t. If you’ve ever read a piece of writing that was entertaining, yet informative–one that taught you something or made an argument but had a special, elevated, quality that made it a pleasure to read–then you have experienced a “good essay.”

But for every “good essay” there is a graveyard of bad ones that throw barriers in the readers’ way, waste their time with dull, confusing prose–and reading them feels like an absolute punishment. One may wonder then, why are there so many bad essays compared to good ones? The answer is simple: bad essays are easier to write.
到達目標   Class Goals In this course, we are going to analyze the work of several great essay writers. We are going to learn the different essay forms; how to stop writing “I’m going to tell you…” and simply tell them; and, most importantly, how to write in your own unique voice.

Evaluation Criteria
This is a participation-heavy course, a significant portion of your grade (40%) will come from how much you contribute to class and group discussions and how well you keep up with your free-writing journal. There will also be 3 essays each semester (20% each).
