The course develops the students’ reading skills and strategies for both intensive and
extensive reading so that they can comprehend and use a wide variety of textual materials
including textbooks, academic articles, periodicals, Internet information, and works of
fiction and non-fiction to support their academic, professional and personal growth.

Students are expected to show that they have understood the reading materials by expressing their own ideas and opinions that build on what they have read and, heard in both written and spoken discourse. This course complements Writing & Critical Inquiry but focuses on reading.

All students, regardless of their English language levels, must speak English at all times. No
more than two undocumented/unexcused absences are allowed. Absence over two classes
is grounds for failure. Tardiness of three times equals one absence.
