This course is a survey of modern world history from the 18th to 20th centuries (up to the early 1980s). The emphasis is on major ideological, technical, and social trends that have affected transcultural and transregional exchanges during this period. Specific topics include nationalism, imperialism, colonialism, and post-colonial developments.

I will put on the elearning site some links to short clips on Youtube. Please look at them before class. Both were done in the 1930s, and were made in the US when there was a strong "isolationist" movement (many people who did not want to get involved in another war in Europe.) The will give you an idea of what life was like in WWI, and how people saw that war. Interestingly, the clip from All Quiet on the Western Front depicts the German side of the war.

This was a famous propaganda movie made for the Nazi Party in 1934. We will watch some scenes from the film, and then discuss how the director depicted the Nazis and Hitler to the audience. We will also think about how this film relates to the theme of mass society.
