授業概要   Course Description This is an introductory course to premodern Japanese culture. Moving chronologically through Japanese history, we will discuss various topics, including core Japanese values and traditions, imperial court and warrior cultures, early modern popular culture, and performing arts. We will also examine cultural products from the eighth through the late nineteenth century, including poetry, illustrated scrolls (emaki), woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), noh and kabuki theater plays, and gardens.
