This course introduces Area Studies, a field that examines societies around the world within the context of global trends. We will study how cultural, social, political, and economic aspects of local communities interact with and influence global phenomena. The approach is multidisciplinary, drawing from various fields such as history, anthropology, political science, and sociology, to provide a comprehensive understanding of each area we explore. The course will define Area Studies, its questions, its areas of focus, and its methods. A significant part of the course is understanding how knowledge of local areas is vital in dealing with global issues, informing international policies, and understanding international relations. By the end of the course, students will have a foundational knowledge of Area Studies, and they will develop the ability to think critically about the relationship between local realities and global trends.
