| 授業概要 Course Description |
This course is designed for total beginners or those who have only studied Japanese for a very short time.
Students will learn
A: How to interact in Japanese under some familiar everyday topics (oneself, family, favorite things, everyday life, recent events). 【Topic based Learning】
B: How to use Japanese in areas of immediate need (shopping, ordering food, asking about locations of objects or things, etc.). 【Learning Situational & Functional Japanese】
Within the framework mentioned in A and B, students will acquire
C: Fundamental knowledge of Japanese culture and language (grammar, vocabulary, writing system and phonetics) which is needed for basic communication in Japanese language.
D: Basic skills of Japanese language through various activities of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the classroom.

At the completion of this course, each student should be able to

Remarks for Class |
* Students are required to attend the class regularly and participate actively in all class activities.
* No credit will be given to those who miss more than 1/3 of all the classes.
* In principle, there will be no makeup quiz or examination.
* Quizzes and assignments will be given in almost every class to make your learning more effective. Since we put emphasis on oral communication in our class activities, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the unit by preparing for the quizzes or doing assignments before and after each class.
* You will have quizzes for Vocabulary of the week, Vocabulary for the unit, Grammar for the unit, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji.
* All the assignments should be handed in by the due date and time. If you hand in an assignment late, the maximum possible score for the assignment will be 80%.
* Students will be given feedback from instructors for all the assignments including Conversation Cards and the Final Essay. Some of the feedback will be given by email and will need to be checked before the next class.
* Food and cell phone use are not permitted in class.
* The schedule and course content may be adjusted depending on the circumstances.
