| 授業概要 Course Description |
This course is designed for total beginners of Japanese or those who have only studied Japanese for a very short time.
Students will learn
【through Topic-based approach】（Marked with ● in the "Daily Class Schedule" section）
A：How to interact in Japanese under some familiar everyday topics (oneself, family, favorite things, everyday life, recent events).
【through Situational & Functional approach】（Marked with ■ in the "Daily Class Schedule" section）
B：How to use Japanese in areas of immediate need (shopping, ordering food, asking about locations of objects or things, etc.).
Students will also learn 64 basic Japanese Verbs and Adjectives （Marked with ◆ in the "Daily Class Schedule" section）which are needed for basic communication in the Japanese language.
Within the framework mentioned in A and B, students will acquire
・ Fundamental knowledge of the Japanese language (grammar, vocabulary, writing system, and phonetics) which is needed for basic communication in the Japanese language.
・ Basic skills of the Japanese language through various activities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the classroom.

授業に関する注意事項
Remarks for Class |
* Students are required to attend class regularly and participate actively in all class activities.
* No credit will be given to those who have missed more than 1/3 of all the classes (60 periods).
* Three late comings or three early leavings will be counted as one absence. Also, if you don't participate in the class for more than sixty minutes, it will be counted as an absence.
* Assignments will be given after some of the classes to give the students enough time to work on the task. It is essential to familiarize themselves with the class content by doing the assignments at home at their own pace.
* All the assignments should be submitted by the due date and time via manaba. If you hand in an assignment late, the maximum possible score for the assignment will be reduced to 80%.
* A quiz/quizzes for Vocabulary of the week/Vocabulary for the unit/Grammar for the unit/Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji will be given at the beginning of almost every class. Memorizing words and letters and mastering grammar is essential to reach the class goals of this course.
* In principle, there will be no makeup quiz.
* The schedule and course content may be adjusted depending on the circumstances.
* Food and cell phone use are not permitted in class.
