授業概要 Course Description |
"Continuity and change" are two words can be used to describe any culture in the world. When applied to Japan, however, there has perhaps been too much emphasis on the former and not enough on the later. In any period of its history, traditional ways of doing and thinking survive as radically new forms of social life and culture emerge. We will study key developments in Japanese culture up to the end of the Edo period, focussing especially on the unusually close relationship between literature and the visual arts. The main reading will be from Nancy Stalker's "Japan: History and Culture from Classical to Cool" (2018). This gives a well-balanced account of the development of new forms of culture developed at all levels of society, including both tangible, physical objects (items of material culture) and intangible aspects like beliefs, customs, and ways of thinking.
|
到達目標 Class Goals |
