Class 15 A traditional View of Japanese religion and medical intervention. La Fleur, William. Liquid Life. Pp. 44-65 Buddhism’s fundamental precepts include a stricture against taking life, but pre-modern Japanese folk religion with Buddhist elements had a world-view that allowed abortion. In this reading, La Fleur discusses the nature of these beliefs, and their application in modern Japan. (The reading packet contains more pages. Pages 44-65 are required; those with an interest are encouraged to read the other items.)
Class 16 Whose vision of Buddhism? Herrigel's depiction of Zen Herrigel, Zen and the Art of Archery The reading is a personal account by Eugen Herrigel of his efforts to master Japanese archery (kyudo 弓道). For decades, this short book was standard reading for college students studying Japanese culture. Many western followers of Buddhism also read it, thus its impact has been great.

Class 17 Whose version of Buddhism? A critical review of Herrigel's vision. Yamada, Shoji. “The Myth of Zen in the Art of Archery.” JJRS http://nirc.nanzan-u.ac.jp/nfile/2726 Today we will go over Yamada Shoji's analysis of E. Herrigel's book Zen and the Art of Archery. As noted in class last Tuesday, Herrigel's account was standard reading for several generations of westerner who wanted to study Japanese culture and Buddhism (especially Zen.) It is seen as a unique window on traditional Asian religions.
However, Yamada raises a number of questions concerning the account. He is especially interested in how information flowed from Awa, the kyudo teacher, to Herrigel, and he asks whether misinformation or misunderstandings had an important effect on Herrigel's text. After you read Yamada, be prepared to discuss one major problem and influenced Herrigel's perceptions of his experience.
