授業概要 Course Description |
This course examines contemporary Japanese popular culture from historical and social perspectives. The scope of objects will include visual and performing arts, literary texts, as well as urban sites and imaginaries as manifestations of popular culture. We will scrutinize the historical, cultural, and social contexts of these objects and answer questions such as: How is this socially constructed? Does it reinforce or resist conventional norms and in what ways? Through the studies of popular culture, we will also deepen our understandings of national identity, gender, urban space, and globalization.
|
到達目標 Class Goals |
By the end of this course, you should be able to 1. Understand key elements such as national identity and gender in the context of cultural studies and area studies; 2. Identify key elements in a work/phenomenon of popular culture and critically discuss the work beyond its entertaining value; 3. Demonstrate how a work/phenomenon of popular culture has been shaped by social and historical contexts; 4. Effectively present your understandings of the lectures in both oral and written communications.

成績評価の基準 Evaluation Criteria |
Pop quiz=30% Lecture notes=20% Group presentation 2x25=50%
Pop quizzes will be given in class. The quiz questions are based on reading materials.
You are required to summarize the main points of 1) reading material, 2) lecture, 3) discussion of each class in written form. Please write paragraphs instead of bullet points. Please keep notes in electronic formats. The length of each note is of your own choosing, but be sure to reflect your understandings of the course contents. Quality matters, not quantity. You will submit the print-outs, in class, twice, in week 7 and week 15. The print-outs should be word-processed, that means, double-spaced, with standard margins, of 12 size Times New Roman or another standard font.
For the presentations, you are required to prepare handouts for your audiences. Using visual aid (e.g., power point, pictures) is optional. If you need any technical support (e.g., PC, cable, etc.), please discuss it with your lecturer at least a week before the presentation day. A group presentation should reflect a collection of equal efforts. No free-riding! Group members who do not show up on presentation day or do not participate in preparation will get ZERO for the presentation.
