授業概要   Course Description This course will be driven by very simple questions. What is gender?
Does gender have only two categories as a man and woman? Or do we have another setting?
As a worldwide debate over their rights for sexual minorities has been growing in many cases in many counties. However, still remains lots of issues such as a difficulty of legalization for same-sex marriage seeing in a contemporary Japan or prejudice and discrimination for the sex- minorities around the world.
In Samoan culture, Pacific islands are located in Polynesia, historically it has a category called “Third-Gender” for a biological man who considers themselves as a woman. However, people of Samoa strongly insist that Samoan ways of “Third-Gender” are not the same concepts as a gay or transgender in a Western way.
Through reading a masterpiece of ethnographies called “Coming Age of Samoa” written by Mead, M. in 1928, we are going to address these inquiries, how do we understand those differences.

This course welcomes all students with neither limitation to a particular study field, nor high English level. Please join if you wish to learn more about Pacific islands culture or gender theory.

- Preparation for leading circle (oral presentation) are required
- Each class have group discussion
- Several movies and visual media or audio will be provided
- No exam offered
