授業概要 Course Description |
This course will be driven by very simple questions. What is gender? Does gender have only two categories as a man and woman? Or do we have another setting? As a worldwide debate over their rights for sexual minorities has been growing in many cases in many counties. However, still remains lots of issues such as a difficulty of legalization for same-sex marriage seeing in a contemporary Japan or prejudice and discrimination for the sex- minorities around the world. In Samoan culture, Pacific islands are located in Polynesia, historically it has a category called “Third-Gender” for a biological man who considers themselves as a woman. However, people of Samoa strongly insist that Samoan ways of “Third-Gender” are not the same concepts as a gay or transgender in a Western way. Through reading a masterpiece of ethnographies called “Coming Age of Samoa” written by Mead, M. in 1928, we are going to address these inquiries, how do we understand those differences.
