Content/Topic
Introduction to the course. What is "global writing"? We will some older examples of writers originating from eastern Europe who moved to English-speaking countries and wrote their most influential work in English. Why did this happen? What effect did it have. Is it as common today for writers to leave their native country and settle abroad? Do they tend to continue to publish in their native language or in another language? Consider the following cases:
CASE STUDY 1: Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977); Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008; NPL in 1970); Svetlana Alexievich (b. 1948 in Belarus, went into exile, now living Ukraine but publishing in Russian, NPL in 2015).
