授業概要   Course Description Employing a multidisciplinary approach to the understanding of American society, culture and history, from the 15th century to early 20th century, this course will provide a new introduction to the very idea and the founding history of America. With touchstone attention to Asia (notably India, Japan, and China) in the idea of America, the diverse sources of its people, African, European, Native American, and more, this course takes the history of matters African American as a central guide.

Lectures will be given in English during the first in-class session each week (MGU second period Mondays); the presentation of visual material, mainly film and video, followed by in-depth in-class group discussion in English, will occupy the second in-class session each week (MGU fourth period Mondays). The screening and discussion of film, video and other visual material, as well as the listening and discussion of music, will all be core elements in the work of this course.
到達目標   Class Goals On the basis of multiple disciplines or forms of knowledge, notably history, anthropology-sociology, literature, philosophy, and political-philosophy, the course aims to cultivate for the student a perspective that is at once historical and “cultural,” and fundamentally comparative in all senses of method or purview.

授業に関する注意事項   
Remarks for Class
You must take this course (Monday 2nd period) together with KC 3024 Contemporary Global Issues B (Monday 4th period).
Class sessions. Lectures will be given in English during the first in-class session each week (second period Mondays); the presentation of visual material, mainly film and video, followed by in-depth in-class group discussion in English, will occupy the second in-class session each week (fourth period Mondays). Guidelines, for the course journals (notetaking) in general, as well as the assignment and due date for the final journal review, will be given in class.
教科書   Texts Essentially, all course materials will be assigned or made available in English. Although, we will not use any specific textbook, all lectures and most discussions are based in primary original documents in English. These documents or links to them in original or scholarly form will be made available on the course website. It is the responsibility of each student to retrieve and study these documents prior to the class session(s) for which they are assigned. Visual material will be presented mainly during the second in-class period of the week, although some may begin in the first in-class session and continue into the second. Relevant links for such material will be available online.

For work in the course the overall final grade will be determined as follows.
1. Lecture Attendance: 25 % (noted/recorded at the beginning and end of every in-class lecture session)
2. Discussion Participation: 25 % (noted/recorded for every in-class discussion session)
3. Journals (Note-taking): 50 % (guidance given during first two in-class sessions of the term)
