授業概要   Course Description This course studies the major political and social transformations that have affected China, Japan and Korea from the 19th century and the present day. The survey begins with an overview of these societies respective histories prior to 1800, and then shifts to looking at the impact of western imperialism on east Asia. The class will then examine Japanese imperialism, and cultural interactions between Asia and Europe/North America, WWII, and the emergence of east Asian economic and political influence from the 1980s

Overview of the class goals and contents. A general discussion of student perceptions of East Asia

Class 2 Survey of East Asia before 1800
Maps and data notes will be distributed in the first class. We will discuss these in Class 2, and I will lecture on general trends in Asia before the advent of modern Western influence.
