授業概要   Course Description This is an introductory course on interpretation and translation, focusing on consecutive interpretation, both from Japanese to English (J to E) and from English to Japanese (E to J). Students will learn how to prepare, how to perform in a professional manner, and hot to cope with difficult situations. Students will also experience various types of translations to learn the difference (only E to J).

The course will consist of the following.
1. Lectures on the concept and techniques of interpreting
2. Exercises for the development of different skills needed for interpreters,
3. Interpreting performance using practical settings and relevant topics for international studies students,
4. Group discussion and activities,
5. In-class translation,
6. "Student Pitching Sessions"— each student will give a presentation, which will be interpreted by other student. (from weeks 9 to 12), and
7. Homework assignments including translations.

Translation assignments will be returned with comments or discussed during the class.

After each class, except for during the pitching sessions, the instructor will upload to manaba a document titled such as “Week 1 Review” with items and texts covered in the class, explanations on assignments, and various notices. Read them carefully to practice, prepare for interpreting, and submit the assignments, and, for absentees, catch up the class.

*This course is capped at 20 students. If there are more applicants, the above in-class translation will serve as a student selection test. The result of the selection will be notified to each student by noon, April 12th.

Non-presenters will be given a feedback sheet. Evaluate each pitch and give feedback to presenters and interpreters. Keep the sheet for the final voting for the best pitch.
