授業概要   Course Description This course examines the nature and workings of the American political economy and society. To achieve a well-balanced understanding of the country in the context of the globalized world, we study the United States by comparing it to other industrialized democracies of North America, Europe, and Oceania. We seek to understand the interplay among politics, the economy, and society and its effects on the economy and the well-being of citizens. We review (1) how political institutions—such as government structure, electoral system, party system, and types of governments, or government partisanship and ideology—affect democracies’ economic policy and performance; (2) how political-economic institutions—such as central banks and labor organization—affect economic policy and performance; (3) how economic conditions affect politics and society; and (4) how different capitalist economies affect citizens’ lives and well-being differently.
到達目標   Class Goals Students will have a good knowledge of American politics, economy, and society.

Students should learn to think critically and analytically, so that they can use the thinking skills to advance their goals in their future endeavors. Critical thinking requires being open to new or different ideas. To be a critical thinker is not to be an unconditional, blind negator of every argument you hear. A critical thinker helps an author or an analyst improve her analysis to ensure that her findings and conclusions—and ultimately all of our knowledge—are the best possible knowledge she could get at the time. You should always ask, “Does this argument make sense?,” “Is this logically coherent?,” “Is it supported by evidence?,” “Is the evidence collected and presented in an appropriate, legitimate way?” Importantly, a critical thinker needs to apply the same strict standards to her own work. We will keep these elements of critical thinking in mind throughout the course, particularly in class discussions and research paper projects

授業に関する注意事項
Remarks for Class
Students are required to have read all assigned texts and be prepared to make input in class discussion when coming to each class meeting. (I repeat: Do all assigned reading before coming to class.) The class is conducted based on students’ knowledge and understanding of assigned subjects acquired from their pre-class reading of the textbook. The instructor introduces and asks questions, students answer them, the entire class explains the subjects, and the entire class examines the veracity and implications of the explanations set forth.

All of us participating in this course will work together to help each other learn and think, so that everybody will get most out of this course. Class discussion is a means to achieve this collective goal and will be stressed in computing your overall grade.

Your class participation will affect not only your participation grade but probably also your grades in the research paper and exam, because the level of critical and analytical thinking fostered in class will be reflected in the quality of your paper and exam answers.

Repeated unexcused absences will result in an overall D.
