授業概要   Course Description The purpose of this course is to introduce students to a basic knowledge of the nature and workings of modern capitalist economies (welfare states). The countries we cover are West European countries and Anglo-Saxon countries. The entire class is conducted in English. We particularly focus on governments’ policy and its effects on countries’ economic performance, as measured by economic efficiency and growth, employment (or unemployment), and income inequality and poverty. We ask questions, such as the following. “What kind of policies do governments employ to promote economic performance?” “Are government policies effective in achieving positive economic outcomes?” “Is it possible to achieve economic growth and income equality simultaneously? If the answer is yes, what policy mix is instrumental? If the answer is no, why?”
到達目標   Class Goals Students will have a basic knowledge of the modern capitalist economies and welfare states (West European countries).

授業に関する注意事項
Remarks for Class
Students are required to have read all assigned texts and be prepared to make input in class discussion when coming to each class meeting. The class is conducted based on students’ knowledge and understanding of assigned subjects acquired from their pre-class reading of textbooks. The instructor introduces topics and issues and asks questions, students answer them, and the entire class discusses and examines the subjects.

All of us participating in this course will work together to help each other learn and think, so that everybody will get most out of this course. Class discussion is a means to achieve this collective goal.

Attendance will be monitored. Repeated absences will result in an overall D or N (failure).
