| 授業概要 Course Description |
This course examines the history of social movements in Japan from the 1940s to the 1990s. By focusing on the formation and transformation of “good citizenship” in the political discourse of postwar Japan, and by introducing several key Japanese intellectuals’ discourses on democracy and modernity, we will discuss how political ideas have affected the social process, especially in the attempt of re-establishing the relationship between the private sphere and the public sphere.

| 到達目標 Class Goals |
This course is designed to deepen your understanding of the following two subjects:
(1) We will look into political and social transitions from wartime mobilization to occupation, reconstruction of political system, the era of rapid economic growth and beyond. By the end of this course, you will be able to understand and explain the basic history of postwar Japan.
(2) By examining modernization and democratization in Japan, this course will help you reflect on what is universal and what is particular in political ideas, and hopefully will help you broaden your perspectives on the forms and possibilities of politics.
